عــضد الدولة أبو شجاع ألـب أرسلان محمد .. 1029 - 1072 ... رابـع سلاطين الإمبراطوريـة السلجوقيـة و أقواهم ...
تلقب بالسلطان الكبير .. و الملك العادل ... و سلطان العالم ...
امتد سلطانه على واحدة من أكبر دول الإسلام في التاريخ .. فخفقت رايته من بلاد ما وراء النهـر حتى سواحل الشـام ..
كان السلطان ألب أرسلان تقياً عفيفاً .. يخشى الله في رعيته على اتساع ملكه و يحسن لهم أيما إحسان ... و نظم الدواوين لرعاية الفقراء و المحتاجين ... و شجع العلم بكل صنوفه شرعياً و دنيوياً فظهر العديد من نوابغ الحضارة الإسلامية مثـل أبـو حامد الغزالي و عمر الخيام و غيرهم ...
كان للسلطان ألـب أرسلان و وزيره نظـام الملك دوراً عظيماً في حفظ الإسلام و تقوية أهل السنـة و الجماعة ... خصوصاً مع انتشار التشيع في مصر و الشام من قبل الفاطميين و المرداسيين و الحمدانيين قبلهم ... فتم إنشاء المدارس النظامية التي أزاحت المذهب الشيعي و خرجت كبار الفقهاء و الشخصيات التي ستلعب لاحقاً دوراً مهما في التاريخ الإسلامي ... فيعد بذلك ألب أرسلان من أهم الممهدين لظهور جيل نور الدين زنكي و صلاح الديـن الأيوبي لاحقاً ممن حرر القدس ..
ومن الناحية العسكرية فإن أبـرز ملامـح إنجازاته الخارجية كان انتصـار ملاذكـرد سنة 1071 ... حين سحـق بجيشه الصغير جيشاً عظيماً للإمبراطورية البيزنطية في معركـة من المعارك الفاصلة في التاريخ ... و التي كانت أحد الأسباب الرئيسية للحروب الصليبية ... و يروي ابن الأثير أن السلطان ذلك اليوم صلى بالناس و بكى .. فبكوا لبكائه .. ثم دعا و دعوا معه و قال لهم بأن من يريد الإنصراف فليفعل .. فما ههنا سلطان يأمر و ينهى .. ثم تقلد سيفه و تحنط و لبس البياض و قال لجنوده : إن قتلت فهذا كفني ..
و زحف باتجاه العدو حتى إذا اقترب منهم ترجل عن فرسه و سجد على الأرض و و عفر وجهه بالتراب يطلب النصـر من الله العظيم ... ثم حمـل بجيشه على العدو حتى مزقهم المسلمون أشتاتاً و كتب الله لهم النصر ..
استشهد أسد الإسلام .. السلطان السلجوقـي ألـب أرسلان .. بطعنه من قبل شخص يدعي يوسف الخوارزمي ..
دفـن السلطان رحمه الله في مدينـة مـرو في تركمانستان الحالية ..
