تقع باريس على بعد 170كم إلى الجنوب الشرقي من بحر الشمال، وهي تقع في قلب سهل منخفض خصب التربة مكتظ بالسكان، يعرف باسم حوض باريس. ويصل عدد سكان باريس إلى 9,060,257 نسمة، وبهذا تعتبر واحدة من أكثر مدن العالم ازدحامـًا إذ يصل متوسط عدد السكان في الكيلو متر المربع إلى 20,726 نسمة. إن نهر السين ينحني عبر باريس لمسافة 13 كم تقريبـًا من الشرق إلى الغرب ويعرف ذلك الجزء الواقع شمالي النهر بالضفة اليمنى، حيث توجد المكاتب التي تعج بالأعمال والمصانع الصغيرة والمحلات الفاخرة. أما الضفة اليسرى وتقع جنوبي النهر فهي مركز مشهـور لحيـاة الفنانين والطلاب. وقد تم تشييد باريس حسب خرائط تطورت عبر مئات السنين. وتعتبر إحدى جزر السين إيل دو لا سيتي وتعني ـ جزيرة المدينة ـ قلب باريس، وهي الجزيرة التي أقيمت فوقها المدينة منذ أكثر من 2,000 عام، وسرعان ما اتسعت باريس على جانبي النهر. وفي عام 1200م تقريبـًا تم بناء حائط قوي حول المدينة. استمرت باريس في النمو، واستمرت عمليات بناء حوائط جديدة في سلسلة من الدوائر الآخذة في الاتساع. وتمتد الشوارع الرئيسية اليوم، في مواقع الجدران القديمة. لمدينة

يرجع تاريخ باريس إلى أكثر من 2,000سنة، ففي عام 52 ق.م. وجد جنود روما القديمة في المنطقة قبيلة تعيش على صيد الأسماك، وقد أقام الرومان مستعمرة في المنطقة. وفيما يسمى في أوروبا بالعصور الوسطى اتسعت باريس بسرعة وأصبحت مركزًا رئيسيًا للثقافة والحكم. في عام 1792م أثناء الثورة الفرنسية أصبحت فرنسا من بين أولى الدول التي عزلت ملكها وأقامت الجمهورية. وأثناء الحرب العالمية الأولى (1914-1918م) ساهم سائقو سيارات الأجرة الباريسية في كسب معركة مارن الأولى عن طريق قيامهم بنقل القوات المحاربة بسرعة إلى الجبهة. أما أثناء الحرب العالمية الثانية (1939-1945م) فقد احتلت القوات الألمانية باريس.
منذ ألفي عام مضت، قال القائد الروماني يوليوس قيصر عن أهل باريس إنهم ماهرون مبدعون ويميلون إلى الشجار فيما بينهم ؛ ومازال الوصف صادقـًا عن الباريسيين حتى اليوم، فهم مشهورون بفنونهم الإبداعية وحرفهم، وتؤدِّي بهم مشاعرهم السياسية القوية إلى الشجار المرير. وتؤكد نواحي التشابه بين أهل باريس صحة مثل فرنسي يقول: “كلما تغيرت الأشياء ظل أهل باريس على حالهم”.
اليوم تمر مدينة باريس بتغييرات جذرية، إذ يتم بناء مجمعات حديثة للإسكان ومكاتب الأعمال جنبـًا إلى جنب مع المنشآت الثقافية والترفيهية. وفي نفس الوقت يتم ترميم مبانيها وآثارها القديمة الرائعة. إن باريس تحافظ على شبابها بينما تحفظ كنوز ماضيها.
